There Is A Solution!
Addiction Intervention - Help a Loved One Stop Drug Abuse
Statistics show that one out of every three people in the US is living with someone or is related to someone suffering from alcohol abuse or drug abuse. In the end, it does not really matter what the addiction is. What's important is that the addicted person gets treatment and this is where addiction intervention comes in.
Starting the Process of Intervention
When it comes to intervention, you will most likely need the help of a professional interventionist. This is because, as someone close or even related to the addicted person, you too are suffering from the addiction, as your life is also impacted. As such, you may be too emotionally attached to the problem to be able to clearly plan the solution. Furthermore, an interventionist is equipped with the necessary skills and tools to plan effectively for the addiction intervention day.
However, it does not mean that you cannot prepare. In fact, it is important that you jot down a few things for yourself before you fully start setting in motion the "wheels of intervention" Ask yourself WHY you are doing this. Aside from the obvious reason of helping the addicted person, list other positive results of intervention, such as better overall family relationships or reduced stress at work, etc. Your reasons will also help to convince other people to be part of the intervention team later on.
- Make up a list of five to eight people you plan to invite to be part of the intervention team. Prepare any arguments you may have to render in case somebody does not want to participate.
- Write down, via a list, all the addictions of your relative or friend. This will help you select the right interventionist later on.
People are realizing more and more that intervention is the solution that can convince an addicted person to seek treatment. Don't do nothing and simply watch a person's life be ruined by alcohol or substance abuse. Even if in the end, the addicted person does not seek treatment, at least you know that you have done everything possible at this time.
The first step is obviously the hardest. Denial is a powerful thing. Be sure to talk to an addiction specialist if you think you have a problem - or if you’re an addict in recovery and require pain medication from an injury. Unfortunately, some doctors will unknowingly prescribe addictive medication to an addict, or try and treat addiction with other drugs. You wouldn't go to a heart specialist for skin cancer, or a psychiatrist for a physical injury, so please turn to an addiction expert for an addiction. I have included a couple of links to treatment centers on this site. If you, a friend or a family member needs help....PLEASE DON'T WAIT! If you have any questions, I will try to answer them.
